Botox for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis): How a Board-Certified Dermatologist Can Help You Feel Comfortable and Confident Again

Botox treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the underarms, face, and scalp performed by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Caren Campbell at CCMD Dermatology in San Francisco, California.

Botox for Excessive Sweating: A Life-Changing Treatment for Hyperhidrosis

Sweating is normal. It helps regulate body temperature and keeps us healthy.

But if you find yourself soaking through shirts, avoiding handshakes, ruining makeup before an event, or feeling embarrassed during work presentations, you may have hyperhidrosis—a medical condition causing excessive sweating beyond what your body needs.

As a board-certified dermatologist, I see firsthand how profoundly excessive sweating affects confidence, relationships, careers, and quality of life. The good news? Hyperhidrosis is highly treatable, and one of the most effective options is Botox® injections.

At CCMD Dermatology in San Francisco, we treat sweating in many areas of the body—including the underarms, scalp, forehead, face, hands, and feet—with personalized treatment plans designed around your lifestyle.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that occurs even when you aren't exercising or overheated.

It affects approximately 5% of the population, yet many people never seek treatment because they assume "that's just how I am."

There are two major types:

Primary focal hyperhidrosis

This is the most common form and usually affects:

  • Underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis)

  • Hands

  • Feet

  • Face

  • Scalp

It often begins in childhood or early adulthood and isn't caused by another medical condition.

Secondary hyperhidrosis

Sometimes excessive sweating develops because of another condition or medication, including:

  • Menopause

  • Early menopause after cancer treatment

  • Certain antidepressants

  • Endocrine disorders

  • Neurologic disease

Determining why you're sweating is just as important as treating it.

Menopause, Cancer Treatment, and Excessive Sweating

One group that is often overlooked is women experiencing:

  • Menopause

  • Perimenopause

  • Early menopause after breast cancer treatment

  • Medication-induced hot flashes

Many breast cancer survivors cannot safely take hormone replacement therapy, leaving them with persistent hot flashes and facial or scalp sweating that can interfere with daily life.

While Botox does not treat the hormonal cause of hot flashes, it can significantly reduce the sweating component, particularly on the:

  • Forehead

  • Hairline

  • Scalp

  • Face

For many women, this means being able to wear makeup, style their hair, attend meetings, dine out, exercise, and simply feel more comfortable in social situations.

If excessive sweating is affecting your quality of life, it's worth discussing whether Botox could be part of your treatment plan.

Botox for Underarm Sweating

Botox is FDA-approved for treating severe underarm hyperhidrosis that hasn't responded adequately to prescription-strength antiperspirants.

Tiny amounts of Botox are injected just beneath the skin where sweat glands receive signals from nerves.

Botox temporarily blocks those nerve signals, dramatically reducing sweat production.

Most patients notice:

  • Significantly drier underarms

  • Less clothing discoloration

  • Greater clothing choices

  • Improved confidence

Results typically last 3–6 months, and many patients return two to three times per year to maintain results.

Botox for Face and Scalp Sweating

Many people don't realize Botox can also be used off-label to treat excessive sweating of the:

  • Forehead

  • Hairline

  • Scalp

  • Nose

  • Upper lip

This can be life-changing for people whose careers place them in front of others.

Examples include:

  • Physicians

  • Attorneys

  • Public speakers

  • Television personalities

  • Sales professionals

  • Brides preparing for weddings

  • Musicians performing under stage lights

  • Athletes competing in hot environments

  • Fitness instructors

  • Executives giving presentations

Instead of constantly wiping sweat away, patients often report feeling more relaxed and confident because they're no longer worried everyone is noticing their perspiration.

Botox for Musicians, Athletes, and High Performers

Performance matters.

Whether you're playing the violin under stage lighting, giving a keynote presentation, performing surgery, or competing in elite athletics, excessive sweating can interfere with your ability to perform at your highest level.

Botox can reduce sweating in areas where moisture becomes distracting or performance-limiting, helping patients focus on their craft rather than their perspiration.

For many patients, treatment isn't about vanity—it's about removing one more obstacle between them and performing with confidence.

What About Sweaty Hands and Feet?

Excessive sweating of the palms and soles can make everyday activities surprisingly difficult.

Patients often tell me they struggle with:

  • Handshakes

  • Holding a tennis racket

  • Using electronics

  • Writing

  • Rock climbing

  • Yoga

  • Wearing sandals

Botox can be effective for these areas as well, although injections are typically more uncomfortable than underarm treatments and sometimes require additional comfort measures.

What Other Treatments Are Available?

Treatment depends on where you're sweating, how severe it is, and how much it's affecting your life.

Options include:

Prescription-strength antiperspirants

Often the first treatment for underarms, hands, and feet.

Prescription topical medications

Topical glycopyrronium cloths (Qbrexza®) can help some patients with underarm sweating and may also be useful for certain cases of facial sweating.

Botox injections

One of the most effective treatments for:

  • Underarms

  • Face

  • Scalp

  • Hands

  • Feet

Oral medications

Medications such as glycopyrrolate or oxybutynin can reduce sweating throughout the body but may cause side effects like dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, urinary retention, and, with long-term oxybutynin use, potential cognitive concerns in older adults.

miraDry®

This energy-based treatment permanently destroys many sweat glands in the underarms and can provide long-lasting reduction in sweating after one or two sessions. It is only used for the underarms.

Surgery

Reserved for severe cases that haven't responded to less invasive treatments.

Is Botox Right for You?

You may be a good candidate if excessive sweating causes you to:

  • Change clothes multiple times a day

  • Avoid certain colors or fabrics

  • Feel embarrassed socially

  • Ruin makeup or hairstyles

  • Avoid public speaking

  • Limit exercise

  • Experience sweating that interferes with work or performance

  • Struggle with menopausal or cancer-treatment-related facial or scalp sweating

During your consultation, we'll discuss:

  • When your sweating began

  • Which areas bother you most

  • Possible underlying medical causes

  • Previous treatments you've tried

  • The treatment plan that best fits your goals

Why Choose Dr. Caren Campbell?

As a board-certified dermatologist, I believe sweating deserves the same thoughtful evaluation as any other medical condition.

Rather than simply treating symptoms, I work to determine whether your sweating represents primary hyperhidrosis or an underlying medical issue, and then develop a treatment plan tailored to your anatomy, lifestyle, career, and goals.

Whether you're preparing for an important presentation, performing on stage, navigating menopause, recovering after cancer treatment, or simply tired of changing shirts multiple times a day, effective treatments are available.

You don't have to live with excessive sweating.
