Pre-Treatment Care
A Few Weeks Before Treatment:
- Avoid excessive sun exposure 1 week before treatment. Apply a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) physical (contains zinc or titanium) SPF 30+ sunscreen daily to treatment areas.
- Let us know if you have a history of cold sores, prior use of Accutane, or are prone to breakouts. Do not have any laser or other light-based treatments until your Clear and Brilliant series is complete unless approved by our office.
- No self tanning or tanning bed use prior to treatment.
- A few days prior, stop all non-prescription blood thinners: Aspirin, NSAIDs (such as Aleve, Advil, Ibuprofen), fish oil, and vitamin E to reduce bruising.
The Day of Treatment
- Arrive with the treatment area clean and free of makeup, lotions, or products.
- Avoid alcohol, as it can thin the blood and increase bruising risk.
- Shave the treatment area if necessary. Facial hair should be neatly trimmed or cleanshaven. Completely okay if you wish to not, but please understand the price will remain the same.
- You may take Tylenol (acetaminophen) one hour before your appointment to help manage pain or swelling.
Post Treatment Care
What to Expect Post-Treatment:
- The intensity and duration of your side effects depends on the treatment aggressiveness and your individual healing characteristics. These side effects usually last up to a few days after treatment.
- Swelling: You will notice most of the swelling the first morning after treatment, particularly under the eyes and usually lasts two to three days. To minimize swelling: Apply cold compresses; sleep elevated the first night - use as many pillows as you can tolerate; taking an antihistamine before bed (Claritin or Zyrtec) may also decrease swelling.
- Redness: Most redness resolves within the first few hours of after treatment, but a rosy ‘glow’ can remain for several days. If you wish you can apply makeup immediately after treatment to minimize the appearance of redness.
- Pain: Tylenol may be taken to reduce the pain if necessary.
- Blister/Crusting/Scabbing: If a blister, crust, or scab develops allow it to fall off/heal on its own. Do not pick or scratch the area. Keep it moist with Aquaphor or Vaseline until the crust falls off or naturally resolves.
- Temporary redness (PIE): When single spot treating, it is not uncommon for the treated area to remain pink or red for several weeks. This temporary redness (post-inflammatory erythema) gradually fades with time. Daily sunscreen is recommended to help protect the healing skin and minimize prolonged redness.
Post-Treatment Skincare
- Sun Protection: Apply and re-apply sunscreen daily as needed. Sunscreens should be mineral-based (containing zinc or titanium), SPF 30+, and broad spectrum (UVA and UVB). If you know you will be in direct sunlight take additional protective measures by wearing a hat and protective clothing.
- Avoid Excessive Heat: Showering is permitted. However, activities that heat the skin such as going in a hot tub/jacuzzi/sauna or very strenuous exercise are not recommended for 2 days post-treatment.
- Skincare Products: Use gentle skincare products that are non-irritating/non-clogging for one week. Avoid scrubs, toners, acids, retinoids, bleaching creams, and hydroquinone until your skin is healed.
