Pumpkin Seed Oil for Hair Loss: Does It Work?

Hair loss is one of the most common concerns patients bring to a dermatology clinic. Androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) affects nearly 50% of men by age 50, and many patients search for natural treatments for hair loss before considering prescription medications.

One supplement that has gained attention is pumpkin seed oil.

But does pumpkin seed oil actually help hair grow back? A clinical study suggests it may offer some benefit, though the evidence is still limited compared with proven hair loss treatments.

Below, we review what dermatology research says about pumpkin seed oil for androgenetic alopecia.

What Is Androgenetic Alopecia?

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA)—commonly called male pattern hair loss—is a genetic condition caused by sensitivity of hair follicles to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Over time, DHT causes hair follicles to shrink, leading to:

  • Thinning hair

  • Receding hairline

  • Reduced hair density

  • Shorter hair growth cycles

Without treatment, this process typically progresses gradually over time.

Dermatology treatments focus on either:

  • Reducing DHT levels, or

  • Stimulating hair growth

Pumpkin Seed Oil and Hair Growth

Pumpkin seed oil contains compounds that may support hair growth, including:

  • Phytosterols

  • Antioxidants

  • Essential fatty acids

Researchers believe pumpkin seed oil may help hair loss by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT.

This is the same pathway targeted by finasteride, one of the most effective prescription treatments for androgenetic alopecia.

Because of this potential mechanism, pumpkin seed oil has been studied as a natural supplement for male pattern hair loss.

Clinical Study: Pumpkin Seed Oil for Male Pattern Baldness

The most widely cited study on pumpkin seed oil and hair loss was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving men with androgenetic alopecia.

Study details

  • Participants: 76 men with mild to moderate AGA

  • Treatment: 400 mg pumpkin seed oil daily

  • Duration: 24 weeks

Results

After 24 weeks:

  • The pumpkin seed oil group experienced a 40% increase in hair count

  • The placebo group had only a 10% increase

  • Participants taking pumpkin seed oil reported greater satisfaction and visible improvement

These findings suggest pumpkin seed oil may support hair growth in some men with androgenetic alopecia.

Are There Side Effects?

In the clinical trial, pumpkin seed oil was generally well tolerated.

Reported side effects were minimal and included:

  • Mild itching

  • Occasional abdominal discomfort

Adverse events were similar to those in the placebo group, suggesting pumpkin seed oil is relatively safe for most individuals.

What Do Dermatologists Say About Supplements for Hair Loss?

A 2023 systematic review published in JAMA Dermatology evaluated the effectiveness of nutritional supplements used to treat hair loss.

The review identified pumpkin seed oil as one supplement with some evidence supporting potential effectiveness, but researchers emphasized that:

  • Most evidence comes from a single randomized trial

  • Larger studies are needed to confirm results

  • Supplements should not replace evidence-based medical treatments

How Pumpkin Seed Oil Compares to Proven Hair Loss Treatments

While pumpkin seed oil may offer modest benefits, FDA-approved treatments have significantly stronger evidence.

Common dermatologist-recommended treatments include:

Minoxidil

Topical minoxidil stimulates hair follicles and can improve hair density in both men and women.

Finasteride

Finasteride works by lowering scalp DHT levels and is one of the most effective treatments for male pattern hair loss.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP hair restoration uses growth factors from your own blood to stimulate hair follicles.

Hair Restoration Procedures

Advanced treatments can help restore hair density in patients with more advanced hair loss.

Compared with these therapies, pumpkin seed oil should be viewed as a complementary approach rather than a primary treatment.

Should You Try Pumpkin Seed Oil for Hair Loss?

Pumpkin seed oil may be a reasonable option for patients who:

  • Prefer natural hair loss remedies

  • Want to support hair health with supplements

  • Are concerned about potential side effects from medications

However, patients experiencing progressive hair thinning should consult a dermatologist early. Hair loss treatments tend to work best when started before significant follicle miniaturization occurs.
