What is a cyst removal?
Cyst removal is a minor surgical procedure to remove a non-cancerous, fluid-filled sac that develops beneath the skin. Common types include epidermoid cysts, sebaceous cysts, and pilar cysts. These lesions can grow over time and become painful, infected, or cosmetically bothersome. Removal involves extracting the entire cyst sac to prevent recurrence.
Why would a cyst need to be removed?
Cysts are typically removed if they are:
- Painful, inflamed, or infected
- Draining or ruptured
- Rapidly growing or changing
- Located in an area of friction
- Cosmetically concerning to the patient
Removing the full cyst capsule is key to preventing regrowth or re-infection.
What happens during a cyst removal?
The area is cleansed and numbed with lidocaine. A small incision is made directly over the cyst. The entire cyst sac is carefully dissected and removed. If the cyst is inflamed or ruptured, drainage may be performed first and removal scheduled for a later date. The wound is closed with stitches and covered with a sterile dressing. The removed tissue is sent to pathology for confirmation if indicated.
What does recovery look like?
Sutures remain in place for 7–14 days, depending on the body location. You may experience mild swelling or tenderness for a few days. Avoid activities that stretch or stress the area to promote clean healing and reduce scarring. Keep the site clean and follow specific post-procedure instructions provided at the time of your visit.
Do all cysts need to be biopsied?
Not all, but many cysts are sent to pathology to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other growths. Infected or ruptured cysts may need a staged approach with drainage first, then surgical excision after inflammation subsides.
