Mole Removal

What is mole removal?

Mole removal is a common dermatologic procedure performed for either cosmetic reasons or to evaluate a mole for signs of skin cancer. Moles (also known as nevi) are usually benign growths, but changes in size, shape, or color may prompt removal for biopsy. The mole may be removed using a shave technique or surgical excision, depending on its features and location.

Why would a mole need to be removed?

Moles are removed for a variety of reasons: atypical or malignant changes, irritated by clothing or shaving, cosmetic concerns, or changes in color, border, size, or symmetry.

Dermatologists may recommend removal if the mole meets any criteria of the ABCDE rule (Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter >6mm, or Evolving).

What happens during a mole removal?

Depending on the type of mole and its characteristics, one of the following may be performed:

  • Shave: The mole is numbed with lidocaine and shaved off at skin level using a surgical blade. No stitches are needed, and healing occurs over 1–2 weeks.
  • Punch: The mole is removed more deeply, often with a small margin of surrounding skin. The area is closed with stitches and typically heals in 1–2 weeks.

The removed tissue is sent to a lab for analysis under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.

What is recovery like?

  • A scab will form and naturally fall off within 1–2 weeks. Minor redness or a flat scar may remain.
  • Sutures are removed after 7–14 days depending on the location. It’s important to avoid stretching the area to prevent scarring. You may be advised to avoid strenuous activity or sun exposure until the area is fully healed.

Will I need a biopsy?

Yes. All moles removed for medical reasons are sent to pathology for microscopic analysis, even if they appear benign. This ensures an accurate diagnosis and helps rule out melanoma or other forms of skin cancer.
