Botox and Dysport

 

What are Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport (aka Neuromodulators) are modified proteins that are injected into small facial and neck muscles to relax them.  By relaxing these muscles facial wrinkles and neck bands are diminished. Botox and Dysport injections are FDA approved for a number of cosmetic indications and have been used for decades for neurological conditions like facial spasms.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Coca-Cola versus Pepsi is a good analogy.  They are made by different companies, but both offer relaxation of fine lines and wrinkles.  Dr. Campbell can work with you to decide which is best for you.

How do Botox and Dysport work?

Botox and Dysport are manufactured as powders and arrive in precisely dosed vials.  The powder form of the protein is diluted with sterile saline so that it can be injected directly into the appropriate muscles.

Botox and Dysport injections causes the injected muscles to relax so that the overlying skin cannot be wrinkled, which diminishes the appearance of the wrinkles over time.  

Where can you use Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport can be used for horizontal forehead lines, “11”s between the eyebrows, crows feet lines around the eyes, lip stick lines around the mouth, dropping of the corners of the mouth, gummy smiles, pebbly texture on chins, and tree trunk like bands in the neck.  

Botox and Dysport are also used for excess sweating of the underarms, palms and soles.  

Will Botox or Dysport completely eliminate my wrinkles?

Some people get better results than others.  Those with very deep frown lines or thick forehead muscle may not lose the wrinkle completely although it will be less deep and give a softer appearance.  Over time with multiple treatments, most patients will experience even more dramatic improvement in their wrinkles given the muscles become increasingly relaxed and they have limited the wrinkling of the overlying skin.

How long does it take to work?

Full effect is achieved at 2 weeks, but begin as early as day one or two.  The results are temporary until the product wears off. There are a small group of patients who do not respond at all, but this is very rare.

How long does it last?

On average, it lasts three months for treatment of wrinkles.  The results of Botox and Dysport are variable in different people.  It can last anywhere from three to six months. There are a small group of patients who do not respond to Botox or Dysport.  

For excess sweating, Botox or Dysport will last upwards to 6 months.  

What are the possible side effects of Botox or Dysport?

Occasionally, bruising, mild swelling and headache can be experienced.  On very rare occasions some patients may get slight depression or drooping of their upper eyelids and eyebrows.

Are there any restrictions prior to treatment with Botox or Dysport?

These procedures may cause bruising and/or swelling.  To minimize bruising, if possible, please stop all aspirin and/or aspirin products, ibuprofen, fish oil, or Vitamin E products 10-14 days prior to injection.  If these are prescribed by your doctor, it is best to check with your prescribing doctor prior to stopping.  You should avoid alcohol 24 hours pre or post- procedure. 

You can not be pregnant or breastfeeding.  You should not be treated if you have an egg or cow’s milk allergy or any neuromuscular junction problems.

Are there any activity restrictions after Botox or Dysport treatment?

Patients are instructed not to bend over, lie down or exercise for 4 hours after they are injected.  Also, do not touch or massage the site for at least 4 hours after treatment. No exercising until the following day after treatment.  Normal activities can be resumed completely the day after treatment.

Does Botox or Dysport treatment hurt?

Botox or Dysport are injected with a very small needle.  It causes as much discomfort as a small injection. 

How much does Botox or Dysport cost?

The cost of Botox or Dysport varies with area being treated and individual patient needs.  Quotes are provided at patient request and stored in your chart. Most patients depending on their individual needs spend between $200 to $1,000.

What are the post-care instructions for Botox and Dysport?

  • Do not lie down for 4 hours.

  • Do not touch or massage the treated areas for 4 -6 hours.

  • Work the treated areas by wrinkling the forehead or frowning for 1-2 hours.

  • Do not exercise (running, aerobics, weight lifting, etc) for 24 hours.

  • No aspirin or ibuprofen for 24 hours.

  • It may take up to 2 weeks for full effect to be achieved.
